Florida authorities have seized 60 illegal slot machines from a business masquerading as a legal bingo hall, highlighting the ongoing risks posed to players by unlawful gambling operations.
The Florida Gaming Control Commission (FGCC), in cooperation with the Cape Coral Police Department, carried out a raid on Uptown Bingo in Cape Coral as part of an enforcement effort named “Operation Going Downtown.” The operation targeted slot machines that were falsely marketed as “bingo” or “instant bingo” games. Under Florida law, electronic devices that simulate slot machines and use bingo themes are illegal.
Players should note that while traditional bingo and instant bingo played with paper cards are legal for Floridians aged 18 and older, electronic versions that mimic slot machines are prohibited. The FGCC clarified that simply labeling a slot machine as bingo does not make it lawful.
“Bingo is fun, and the FGCC supports lawful play,“ said FGCC Commissioner Peter Cuderman. “Unfortunately, criminals prey on Floridians by using a bingo theme on slot machines and falsely claiming these games are legal.“ This illegal activity not only exposes players to unregulated gambling but also undermines legitimate charitable gaming efforts.
Cape Coral Police Chief Anthony Sizemore emphasized the broader risks to the community, stating that illegal gambling operations can “undermine legitimate charitable gaming and can create opportunities for broader criminal activity.“ He added, “Our partnership with the Florida Gaming Control Commission allows us to effectively investigate these operations and protect the residents of Cape Coral. We remain committed to enforcing the law and ensuring businesses operate legally and responsibly within our community.“
For players, this enforcement action means safer gaming environments and clearer distinctions between legal and illegal gambling options. Floridians interested in playing slot machines should be aware that these are only legal at eight licensed locations in Miami-Dade and Broward Counties, as well as at facilities operated by the Seminole Tribe of Florida. A mapped list of authorized venues is available at FLGaming.gov/locations.
Players are advised to exercise caution and verify the legality of gaming venues to avoid unregulated gambling risks. Illegal operations often lack consumer protections and may increase exposure to gambling harm. This enforcement serves as a reminder that not all bingo-themed electronic games are lawful, and players should seek out licensed operators.
Illegal gambling enforcement remains a priority for Florida regulators and law enforcement agencies to protect consumers and maintain the integrity of legal gaming. Players can stay informed about legal gaming options and enforcement actions through official sources.
